The exhibition “Zwischen zwei Orten - Artist Couple Elín Jakobsdóttir and Mark Sadler” is dedicated to the artistic work of the artist couple Jakobsdóttir and Sadler. Since 1994 they have lived together in London, Glasgow, Paris and since 2005 they have commuted between Berlin and Glasgow. They both work primarily in painting, but also in other medias such as film, object art, music and writing. Jakobsdóttir and Sadler each pursue their own visions, while their studios provide space for discussion and critique. The title of the exhibition “Zwischen Zwei Orten” (Between two Places) refers precisely to this space between the studios, their two homes and their two different artistic approaches and attitudes, which are nevertheless intimately linked.
Elín Jakobsdóttir and Mark Sadler met in the late 1980s while studying at the Glasgow School of Art. Several years of individual explorations, travels and exhibitions later, the two met again by chance in Glasgow, both seeking critique and solidarity. They formed an artist group of two and then became a couple. Respect and an honest and well-founded engagement with each other's work are the basic prerequisites for their working and living community, which for many years has included two children as well as separate studios. “Zwischen Zwei Orten” at Haus Kunst Mitte is their first institutional exhibition as a couple. They have worked intensively on it together over the past months and are presenting many new paintings, as well as objects, film, text and song.
“Zwischen Zwei Orten” is the first exhibition in a series on the theme of artist couples at Haus Kunst Mitte. The next exhibition on this theme is planned for 2024. The exhibition will be accompanied by a booklet and an extensive programme of accompanying events.
